Chicagoland’s Lake County streams the infectious dance grooves of a one-man pop/electronica project, Breathe Electric. This glamorous dance band got its start from a few melodies posted on MySpace as a sort of side project from vocalist/everything-ist Grant Harris. After the attention and success that quickly grew online, the internet successful hipster decided to “take it seriously” and assemble live shows. The solo project added members and has since toured on a furious schedule across the country.
This outfit takes a special pride in putting on an energetic live show, complete with the fizzy synth, bumpin’ digital beats, and shout-in your face hooks. Breathe Electric’s debut EP “Honestly” is nothing short of an eight-song collection of glistening electronica. With a 4.96 rating on SmartPunk.com and a place on their top selling albums list, you could say that it’s far beyond a promising sign for an artist who still remains labeless. Tracks such as “The Average” immediately stick in your head courtesy of hooks glowing in every part of the song. An intense electronica-styled pop breakdown is the final cherry on top of the song as Grant passionately sings “We can fight the good fight.” The final and title track “Honestly” brings the album back down from the stratosphere-like aura created in previous numbers, gently placing the listener back on the ground to close curtain on the EP. The best musical quirk about Breathe Electric’s tunes is their tendency to break most of the traditional repetition found in other bands of the genre; Breathe Electric’s songs shift shape and have a flow. Rather than simply flipping from cookie cutter verse to an equally cookie cutter bass beat driven chorus, Grant manages to make the songs remarkably interesting while retaining that same feeling you get when you hear your favorite hellogoodbye song blaring through your car radio. The future for Breathe Electric is looking ridiculously optimistic. The nowadays crucial internet success grows with every passing day as well as a plethora of tour dates including two gigs on the Van’s Warped Tour ‘09. Not bad for a guy who’s music started out as a fun little side project, eh? So for those of you who would love to go to a show and dance your asses off in a non-hardcore manner, this is your new bliss. Go forth and party.
